Merrily We Roll Along Written by Eddie Cantor, Murray Mencher and Charles Tobias. Joker 2 tries to delve into the mind of Arthur Fleck again, but unfortunately it overlaps too much with the first film. The original Joker was such a thorough and thorough character study that by the end it felt like there was little left to reveal. It’s that feeling that haunts this sequel, as it struggles to find new dimensions to Arthur’s complex psyche, making the film feel more like an epilogue than a new narrative.
, further enhancing his disturbing portrayal of the Joker
Joaquin Phoenix is, as expected, excellent in the role of Arthur Fleck. Lady Gaga also brings depth to her role as Harley Quinn and adds a new dynamic to Arthur’s story. But the film keeps drifting away from their strong performances with unnecessary musical numbers and a courtroom drama that doesn’t lend itself well to experimenting with new elements. The callbacks to Arthur’s lonely and troubled journey in the original film create the same eerie tension and emotional weight that made The Joker so powerful.
Ultimately, Joker 2 feels more like a sequel that didn’t have much to say
But attempts to add new layers with courtroom drama and out-of-place musical sequences end up detracting from the flow of the story and feel more like distractions than meaningful additions to Joker and Harley’s toxic relationship. The chemistry between Phoenix and Gaga adds an endearing layer to the film, but unfortunately these moments are few and far between. While it has its highlights, especially in his performances, the film feels like an unnecessary addition to the first chapter rather than a compelling new chapter. Fans of the original may find it redundant, offering little new exploration of Arthur’s character or the world he inhabits at TIFF, the New York Film Festival, etc.
